WER and BFRC – What Does It All Mean?

Author: Conservatory Outlet Team  |  Leave a Comment >>

Guest Post by Andrew Glover from West Yorkshire Windows

Today, I have been to the BFRC open forum discussion on the changes that are going to be taking place in October this year. It was held at Leeds United’s football ground and was attended by about 20 or so people. My understanding is that it was open for all licence holders and I am unsure if anyone else had an invite.

The idea of the meeting was to educate us about the new regulations we all HAVE to comply with and the easiest way to do it.

Basically, from the 1st of October, this year, all replacement windows will have to be C Rated or above and all double glazing installers will have to provide proof that the products they are installing comply with the new rules. The only way to prove what you…

Conservatory Outlet Network Dealers Head To Wales To Learn About Sales

Author: Conservatory Outlet Team  |  Leave a Comment >>

Conservatory Outlet dealers made their way recently to a seminar designed to help them sharpen their sales techniques and strategies and to take maximum advantage of the increasing volumes of sales leads generated by the Conservatory Outlet web sites and television advertising.

Hosted by dealer Greenway Home Improvements at its Pontypool offices and showroom, the day was led by home improvement industry sales legend and guru Ted Urpens, who has previously headed sales for Everest and Thomas Sanderson.

Despite the assembled dealers being amongst the most experienced home improvement specialists in their areas, it was clear that there was a lot to be learned. Matthew Glover, managing director of Conservatory Outlet says that the dealers were impressed with the new ideas that came out of the day: “Many of our dealers have been successful for many years and might have assumed that there was little…

GGF Debates The Work Of The Glass & Glazing Federation

Author: Conservatory Outlet Team  |  Leave a Comment >>

Many People Believe That Trade Associations Are Bodies That Are Self Serving And Unresponsive To The Real Interests Of The Sectors They Claim To Serve. Prove Otherwise.

As a representative body, the GGF been around for hundreds of years, serving the interests of its members. If our members had, at any time, thought that the GGF was ‘self-serving and unresponsive to the real interests of the sectors they claim to serve’, they would simply leave. It is insulting to suggest that they would be happy to fatten an incompetent cash cow.

Now into its fourth century the GGF continues to evolve. In the last year, we have sought external communications advice, and, together with the move to new offices, are now presenting the work of the GGF openly to ensure that our members and indeed, anyone involved with flat glass and glazing, fully understands the role of the GGF and…

What The ‘L’ – A Quizzical Critique For the Double Glazing Experts

Author: Conservatory Outlet Team  |  Leave a Comment >>

After what seems like an eternity we now know the compliance criteria for windows and doors from October thanks to the publication of the 2010 approved document part L.

What does this tell us?

  • Firstly it would appear that the WER scheme is written in to a C rating, while not labelled the BFRC scheme, in essence that is what it is, and secondly that a draconian 1.6 U-value can be used as an alternative.
  • This now means that all the self-certification bodies can produce their own WER schemes, so the next round of self publicizing scammery sets in motion.  With the consumer already being conned by the poor science behind the BFRC scheme, are they next to be subjected to the marketing of schemes, to ensure that they will choose a contractor using the ‘best’ scheme.
  • The fact

Author: Conservatory Outlet Team  |  Leave a Comment >>

The agenda for the next GlassTalk event being held at Walton Hall, Warwickshire on May 27th has been revealed.

The very popular ‘On The Couch’ sessions will feature:

THE END OF INSTALLER & SALES STAFF SELF EMPLOYMENT?
We pit the Inland Revenue against a man that says he has the answer. And it’s available for everyone at GlassTalk.

WER’s: ALL or NOTHING
The creators meet the critics to thrash out Window Energy Ratings and ask ‘IS there a lot of fuss about nothing?

THE SYSTEMS COMPANIES FIGHT BACK
After the mauling the systems received On the Couch at the last GlassTalk, the systems companies get their chance to tell us why they will ensure the window industry has a fine future.

BOARD TO TEARS
The Epwin Group is one of the UK’s glazing industry’s finest companies. But the men that run it have fundamental differences about WERs.…

Wait Over! Approved Documents L & F Published

Author: Conservatory Outlet Team  |  Leave a Comment >>

The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) is extremely pleased to note from the final Approved Document L (Conservation of Fuel and Power) and Approved Document F (Ventilation) for England and Wales, announced on 30 April 2010, that the Communities and Local Government (CLG) have listened to the representations of the Federation and the industry.

The principal changes announced were as follows:

  • For replacement windows, compliance to be based on Window Energy Rating Band C (currently Band E) with an alternative of a U Value of not worse than 1.6 W/m2K (currently 2.0). The centre pane alternative of 1.2 remains but for a limited range of applications only.
  • Conservatories: The current exemption clause remains
  • The potentially burdensome requirement of ‘Consequential Improvements’ has been excluded.
  • A proposal for trickle vents to be fitted to all replacement windows has been dropped (under strong
